Superjumbo ticket auction raises 600k for charity

25/10/2007

An auction for a ticket on the first flight of the world's largest passenger jet has raised over £600,000 for charity.

Tickets for the inaugural trip by Singapore Airline's Airbus A380 - a double decker plane dubbed the most luxurious in the history of commercial carriers - were sold to bidders in an internet auction.

The most expensive ticket went to British businessman Julian Hayward, 38, who paid £50,000 for his flight - and the right to sit in seat 1A in the first class area of the plane.

The cheapest ticket, meanwhile, went for a relatively meagre £273.

Although capable of carrying 800 passengers, Singapore Airline's model's capacity has been cut by the inclusion of luxury suites with beds on the upstairs deck.

The plane touched down in Australia this morning at 8.25 BST.

Manufacturers Airbus expects to make a further 13 planes next year.
