Phuket holidays lead Thai tourism recovery

20/08/2010

The number of travellers taking Phuket holidays surged in the first part of this year. Numbers were up by 28% on last year's figures. Hotel occupancy has been greater this year and the average room prices are down, making Phuket holidays more affordable.

The Thai tourist industry is delighted by the trend, particularly as political unrest put many people off travelling to Thailand. Direct flights to the island of Phuket also meant that travellers could avoid Bangkok, the centre of the disruption.

Phuket holidays are popular with backpackers who take advantage of the island's cheap accommodation, food and spectacular scenery. And Phuket's beaches are stunning. Phuket holidays offer great snorkelling and diving opportunities amongst the surrounding coral reefs. The water is incredibly clear, and in parts, you can see for up to 30 metres. The diving is at its best between October and June, but it's an activity that can be enjoyed all year round.

Sea kayaking around Phang Nga Bay is great for people who love to explore. Tours take in the collapsed caves of Phang Nga Bay, known as 'hongs', and the inflatable boats are able to access caves with incredibly low ceilings. Further inland, travellers can take part in white water rafting, trekking and elephant safaris.

Phuket is renowned for its party atmosphere. Patong Beach is the party capital of Phuket, where there is a big mix of cocktail bars, clubs and colourful cabaret shows.

If you are a backpacker, there are some great hostels in Phuket to choose from, and they are the perfect place to meet like-minded travellers. At the other end of the scale, there are some great luxury retreats for anyone that's after a romantic getaway.
