How to claim compensation if your flight was delayed or cancelled

Claim up to 600 euro per person

If you have suffered a flight delay of longer than 3 hours, or your flight was cancelled with less than 2 weeks’ notice you may be entitled to compensation from your airline.

EU legislation enables travellers who are eligible to claim up to 600 euro per person if their flight was delayed, cancelled by the airline or over booked.

The really good news is, you can still make a claim for flights that were 6 years ago.

Please note: Although the UK has now left the EU, the rules regarding flight delays will remain the same at least until the end of the transition period.

When is compensation payable?

Flight Cancellations

If you were booked to travel on a flight which was subsequently cancelled by your airline you are entitled to compensation under EU law, unless;

  • You are informed about the cancellation at least 2 weeks before the time of departure
  • You were informed about the cancellation less than 2 weeks prior to the flight, but the airline have offered an alternative route and a similar schedule to the original flight.

This compensation is in addition to the airline being obliged to offer you a full refund or an alternative flight.

Flight Delay

If you travelled on a flight which was delayed, you have a right to compensation if the delay was;

  • Two hours or more in the case of flights of 1500 km or less
  • Three hours of more in the case of all intra-community flights of more than 1500 km and of all other flights between 1500km and 3500km
  • Four hours of more

Denied boarding (over-booked)

  • Sometimes airlines request volunteers to give up their seat on a flight due to over booking, if they do not have enough volunteers the airline may deny boarding against the passengers will.  In this situation the passenger is due compensation immediately.

Can an airline turn down your claim?

Yes, an airline can turn down your claim for compensation if the delay or cancellation was due to extraordinary circumstances.

An extraordinary circumstance is something which is outside the control of the airline and something which is not their fault. Eg. Extreme weather conditions, political unrest, employee strikes.

Delays and cancellations caused by technical problems, influenced by other flights and problems at the airport should all be subject to cancellation.
