Pet insurance policies dwarf human health cover

20/08/2008

The number of pet insurance policies taken out by Brits has eclipsed the volume of human medical care cover in the UK.

A new study made the revelation after finding that 23 per cent of pets are insured against bad health whereas only 12 per cent of humans in the UK have private medical care cover.

The research places Brits in pole position as pet-insuring animal lovers, with Sweden coming in second.

Ewan McNeil, former president of the society of practicing veterinary surgeons, explained that many Brits regard their pets as a member of their family.

He added: "I'm not surprised that pet insurance is becoming so popular - people will do everything they can to ensure the best for their pets."

The expert concluded that the popularity of this type of cover could also be down to the leaps and bounds that veterinary healthcare has made in the last few years.

Another reason for the increase in pet insurance could be that celebrities such as Paris Hilton and Britney Spears have sparked a craze for mini dogs, such as chihuahuas, which owners can fit into their handbags, along with other accessories such as their lipstick, reports the Mirror
