World's largest passenger plane ready for take-off

17/10/2007

Flights on the world's largest passenger plane are to begin in just over a week, after Singapore Airways took delivery of the first Airbus A380.

The first commercial flight on the 471-seater aircraft is set for October 25th and will take passengers between Singapore and Sydney.

Flights were to have begun a year and a half ago, but have been delayed following technical faults with the planes.

Subsequent flights on the route are scheduled to operate three times daily from October 28th.

In keeping with the need to comply with environmental laws, the planes have been designed to offer greater fuel efficiency.

A spokesman from Singapore Airlines said: "Fuel burn is considerably lower, on a seat-mile basis, than today's large aircraft.

"This offers operating airlines real efficiency benefits, while also mitigating the environmental impact of flying. Emissions per passengers are the lowest of any aircraft."
