Uninsured drivers cost motorists £500m

19/08/2008

Uninsured drivers are costing motorists £500 million on an annual basis, new research has revealed.

According to comparison website comparethemarket.com, the average driver will pay £31 per year to compensate for those motorists who have not taken out an insurance policy.

Jeremy Moll, head of insurance at comparethemarket.com, said: "One way the government can help with this objective is to take action to reduce the number of illegal drivers on Britain's roads and that has to be through more severe penalties."

He added that if the number of uninsured drivers decreases then insurance firms will be able to price their policies more flexibly.

Earlier this month, the Daily Telegraph newspaper reported that naked vandals, kicking camels and pesky squirrels have all been cited in a spate of weird car insurance claims.

Insurance provider Elephant.co.uk told the publication the bizarre incidents show that motorists should have their eyes peeled at all times for potential hazards.
