UK travellers shaping global travel trends

13/11/2007

UK travellers are at the forefront of tourism trends, it has been claimed.

According to travel research company Tourism Intelligence, Britons lead the field when it comes to seeking out new travel experiences and finding cheaper ways to follow their travel dreams.

This has meant that the rest of the world uses the habits of UK travellers as a barometer as to where the worldwide market is heading, Dr Auliana Poon, managing director at the travel experts claims.

She said: "We call it the Ford Motors effect. Travel used to be mass-produced, standardised and individually packaged. Now the opposite is true.

"The un-packaging and DIY trend is led by the Brits, and understanding them is the key to understanding how the world will travel in the future."

Among the trends highlighted by the firm's research were the UK's profusion of departure points and the range of products available, which is indicative of a high level of competition.

These trends are now likely to be replicated elsewhere, Tourism Intelligence said.
