Travel insurance customers warned to look out for hidden car hire costs

27/05/2009

Car rental firms often try to sell customers additional insurance, but holidaymakers with good travel insurance don't need to buy much of the extra cover on offer.

Personal accident insurance is often foisted on to car rental customers for additional fee, but this included for free in all insurewithease travel insurance premiums.

Some car rental firms also try to sell customers insurance for personal possessions in case they are stolen from the vehicle, but once again this is included in travel insurance bought from insurewithease.

Before agreeing to hire a vehicle, check if the basic price includes collision damage waiver. If it doesn't, you will have to buy it separately which could bump up the price of the rental quite significantly.

Another additional cost is excess waiver, which gets you out of paying the first few hundred pounds of any claim but it can add about £50 to the cost of a week's car hire.

Of the 10 most popular holiday destinations, the Canaries, mainland Spain and Portugal are the cheapest places to hire a car; Turkey and the Greek islands are the most expensive.
