The Maldives draw in honeymoon crowd

26/11/2007

The Maldives is one of the top travel destinations for honeymooners, offering both romantic appeal and reliable weather, it has been revealed.

The islands also score highly with newlyweds since they offer "seclusion" and beautiful beaches, according to Francesca Moore, spokesperson for hitched.co.uk.

She said: "The Maldives are very popular with their white sandy beaches, and anywhere that has over-water bungalows which are built on stilts overwater and are very romantic. The weather is guaranteed to be good, and there's the beautiful scenery and the luxury as well."

Also popular among couples are locations in the Far East, where the "five star hotels are out of this world", while locations in Europe such as Venice and Florence retain the romantic allure that once drew British travellers over for Grand Tours, she added.

News of Ms Moore's comments comes as research from Mintel showed that couples spend an average of £3,000 on their honeymoon – underlining the importance of specialist travel insurance and wedding insurance policies.
