Snow disruption to air travel in the United States

27/01/2011

Heavy snow fall in the northeast of the United States is causing delays and cancellations to flights. John F Kennedy airport in New York is closed until approximately 10:00 EST local time (15:00 UK time), whilst Newark International airport, New Jersey, is closed until 12:00 local time (17:00 UK time).

If your travel plans are affected you may be able to claim on your travel insurance USA under the travel delay section of your policy.

In the first instance passengers are advised to contact their tour operator or airline for the latest information. For the latest information on airport closures and flight delays in the United States, see the Federal Aviation Authority flight delay information website.

How can travel insurance help?

As we all found out before Christmas, disruption to travel plans due to snow and other extreme weather is not limited to destinations abroad, it can happen at home too.

Extreme weather can cause disruption whilst you are away, or even prevent you from leaving the UK in the first place so it's important to know what your travel insurance will cover you for.

Most travel insurance policies will provide cover under the travel delay section, providing a benefit to cover reasonable expenses, if your flight is delayed by more than 12 hours, and often the option to abandon your holiday and claim a full refund after a long delay. Exact terms and conditions will vary between different insurance providers, so it's important to read your policy wording carefully.
