Residents behind Heathrow expansion

11/10/2007

Opposition to expansion of Heathrow Airport is not as widespread among residents as has been reported, it has been claimed.

Contrary to newspaper reports of local opposition to the scheme, a poll conducted by Populus has found that 50 per cent of people living in the immediate vicinity of Heathrow expressed support for the proposed addition of a third runway.

Meanwhile, opposition to a mixed-mode system, where runways could be used for landings and takeoffs, being imposed at the airport was even thinner on the ground.

In the 12 local authorities around Heathrow, up to 56 per cent of residents expressed support for the airport being used in this way, the Associated Press reports.

During the summer the airport saw 2,000 protestors gather at the airport to air their concerns that the new terminal would exacerbate the problem of global warming.

The poll was commissioned by the Future Heathrow organisation.
