Pound at highest rate against Euros for years - Great news for holiday makers

09/05/2012

This summer your pound will buy more euro's than it has for years; great news if you are heading for the continent in search of sunshine and an escape from the rain.

Bureaux de change are currently selling euros at a rate of 1.20 for the first time in 3 and half years, which means British travellers are getting 10% more for their money than they were a year ago. Economists are also predicting that the rate could go as high as 1.28 by the summer as sterling is seen as a safe haven compared to the euro.

Anything that can make your money go further on holiday is always good new, here's 3 other ways that you can save money on holiday.

Avoid the risk of high medical costs by taking travel insurance

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office advises British travellers to buy travel insurance every time they travel, even within the EU the cost of emergency medical bills can easily reach thousands of pounds if you fall ill or have an accident. Paying a few pounds for travel insurance cover before you travel could save you thousands.

Get an European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

An EHIC proves your right to state provided healthcare within the EU, but it doesn't take away the need for travel insurance cover as it does not cover the cost of all medical treatment or repatriation back to the UK.

Despite the fact that you need to have travel insurance anyway, it is still worth getting an EHIC and taking it with you when you travel, because it can save you money.

We will waive the excess payable on a medical claim if you used your EHIC when obtaining treatment and it resulted in a reduction of the medical costs.
