International events are luring Brits abroad

18/10/2007

The advent of ever cheaper travel is prompting more and more Britons to plan city breaks around international events, new figures reveal.

According to data from Lastminute.com the lure of major events such as the Love Parade in Berlin and international festivals has seen the site's traffic increase hugely.

Especially popular is Oktoberfest in Munich, where holidaymakers gather to sample the best German ales, and the New York Marathon - both of which the site says have seen double the number of bookings.

Meanwhile, the glamour of the Cannes Film Festival and Milan's fashion week also had double the number of bookings from the 2006 total when they were held earlier this year.

John Bevan of Lastminute.com said: "Our UK customers are becoming more and more savvy and demanding when they are taking a short break.

"Britons travel extensively and events are great excuses to either go back and spend time in places they have been to before or discover new destinations.

"Holidays are more than ever about the experience and have to offer something extra."
