Hoscars: Polish winner announced

12/02/2008

The best hostels in the world have been announced at the sixth annual Hoscars awards.

Flamingo hostel in Krakow triumphed, winning the award for best hostel in 2007 at the ceremony hosted by Hostelworld.com.

The owner of the hostel, Pawel Wawro, said: "It's amazing! We are really proud but we didn't expect it. We are doing everything that we can for guests who are coming to Krakow."

The winner said he thought they had won due to the atmosphere, which he said was the best thing a hostel can offer a customer.

Over 60,000 travellers voted on the site, with the Flamingo beating 15,000 other hostels.

The ratings travellers gave after their stay were based on staff, cleanliness, fun, location, character and security.

In the top ten was the Hostel of the Sun in Italy and Clarence Castle in Canada, with the second prize going to another Polish hostel, Mama's Hostel.

The travel Libaray suggests the ideal time to visit Krakow is between April and October for those wanting a city break due to the warmer weather.
