Home insurance "may not cover holiday theft"

15/08/2008

Holidaymakers are leaving their homes vulnerable to thieves as many fail to lock values away, a source reported this week.

A recent survey conducted by YouGov on behalf of Swinton shows seven per cent fail to secure their homes when they go away.

Homeowners are urged by Swinton to be extra vigilant and aware of the specifics of their home insurance policies.

The director of insurer development at Swinton Chris Collings states: "It's also worth remembering that some household insurance policies might not cover you if you've said that you have a burglar alarm but then it's not activated at the time of a break in."

Risk of electrical fire can also be reduced if plugs are switched off in the home, a practice which it claims is carried out by 53 per cent of people.

The AA recently warned that those who own holiday homes should extend their insurance to cover the property, especially if it remains uninhabited for most of the year.
