French company launches "sunshine guarantee" travel insurance

29/07/2009

French property group P&V is offering to reimburse customers if their holiday in France is interrupted by more than 4 days of rain in any week as part of its travel insurance cover.

The 'sunshine guarantee' will give those staying at any Pierre et Vacances property up to €150 if their holiday is affected by bad weather, but it comes at a high price.

Insurance premiums cost €67 (about £58) per booking. Standard travel insurance with insurewithease costs less than £10 for a week in France for a family of 4.

P&V's insurance company will analyse satellite photos taken by the French national weather bureau to assess any claims made under its 'sunshine guarantee' and policyholders will receive a telephone call, text or email if they are due compensation.

Our guess is P&V better brace itself for a flood of claims this summer as the weather forecast for parts of France is not looking good. Rain is expected this week and next in Brittany, Normandy and the Loire Valley, where P&V has holiday villages and self-catering apartments.

Clients heading to P&V properties on the Cote d'Azur are unlikely to benefit from the weather insurance, however, as the region typically experiences hot dry summers.
