Foreign Office advises tourist to secure holiday cash

26/10/2010

A survey conducted by sunshine.co.uk has revealed that 42% of British travellers carry all their holiday cash with them whilst they are abroad, rather than securing some of it in their hotel safe. Carrying large quantities of holiday cash can be a risk if you are unfortunate enough to become the victim of crime.

The Foreign Office is advising British holidaymakers to be sensible with holiday cash and use a hotel safe if there is one available.

By keeping holiday cash safe until you need to use it, you can minimise your chances of losing it. On a day to day basis, just take a small amount of holiday cash out with you.

The Foreign Office is also advising travellers to take out comprehensive travel insurance to protect their holiday cash. Travel insurance can cover the loss or theft of your holiday cash up to a certain amount.

The Foreign Office helps British travellers if they find themselves in financial difficulty abroad. While the Foreign Office can help Brits transfer money from home, they can't replace lost or stolen holiday cash, which is why it's important to take out travel insurance.

Whilst some of your holiday cash is safely stashed in the hotel safe, make sure the money you have on your person is also secure. Don't carry purses that display where your holiday cash is stored. Consider wearing a money belt or keep notes in zip-up pockets. You could even sew hidden pockets in your clothing.

When you come to spend money, try not to display how much cash you are carrying. Only hand over enough money to cover the cost of your purchase.
