Flights to Kenya suspended

03/01/2008

British carriers have suspended flights to Kenya for the next two days as a result of political tension.

The Federation of Tour Operators (FTO) announced the move in response to reports of violence in the country following a disputed election result and allegations of corruption, the AFP news agency reports.

A statement from the FTO said: "Members of the Federation of Tour Operators today announced that following advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office they were suspending holidays to Kenya with departures due up to and including Saturday January 5th due to the current political unrest.

"Customers currently in Kenya are being advised of the Foreign Office advice to travellers and are expected to return home on their planned departure dates."

The FTO's decision comes after the Foreign Office last week warned British citizens currently in Kenya to remain indoors and to consult the British embassy for further updates.

It is estimated that around 6,000 Britons are currently travelling in Kenya, with some 3,000 of these doing so on package holidays.
