Fitness training can cut ski injuries

21/11/2007

Winter sports fans can avoid painful injuries by putting in some fitness training before embarking on their trip, it has been claimed.

According to figures from Halifax, 38 per cent of skiers were not sufficiently fit before they hit the slopes last year.

Meanwhile, 19 per cent said that their lack of physical preparation had caused them to have a major accident from which they had lucky to escape physical harm.

Paul Birkhead, senior manager of pricing and underwriting for Halifax Travel Insurance, said: "Of course in the event of an accident anyone with Halifax's Winter Sports cover can make a claim for up to £200 per week (for a maximum of two weeks) on any unused ski-pass."

He left skiers with the advice: "Clearly prevention is better than the cure, and a few months of pre-holiday training can help you to cope with the strain of winter sports, as well as to build up your stamina."

Injuries cost skiers and snowboarders £4.5 million in unused passes last year, the survey also revealed.
