El Salvador, Germany and Greece are top places to visit in 2010

01/12/2009

Lonely Plant has revealed its collection of world's best journeys, destinations and experiences for 2010 and top of the list are El Salvador, Germany and Greece.

The travel guide claims no other city in Central America is 'smarter or cooler' than El Salvador, which it rates for its universities, museums and galleries.

It praises Germany for reinventing itself 'more times than Madonna', and says that Greece 'has something for everyone'.

Also on the top 10 list are Malaysia, included for its diversity, Morocco, Nepal, New Zealand, Portugal, Suriname and the United States of America.

Of Suriname the guide says it is 'quickly emerging as a prime ecotourism and sport-fishing destination, Suriname has everything you could hope for in a wildlife adventure'.

Lonely Planet recommends seeing the USA by train, if only to avoid the advertising billboards and fast food outlets that clutter America's highways.

For those travellers looking not for the most popular destination but the best place to avoid turkey and tinsel this Christmas, lonelyplanet.com has several recommendations including Morocco, St Petersburg and New Ireland in Papua New Guinea.

As a muslim country, Morocco doesn't officially celebrate Christmas and in orthodox Russia Christmas Day is celebrated on January 7, so even Scrooge would feel safe in either of these places on December 25.

Alternatively, a flight to almost any destination should be fairly quiet on Christmas Day, according to lonelyplanet.com, but if you want to avoid a turkey dinner and xmas cracker you might want to consider flying on an Arabian carrier.
