Check with FCO "before travelling to Beijing"

18/08/2008

Holidaymakers have been advised to check with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) before travelling to Beijing for the Olympic Games.

The Association of British travel Agents (Abta) said that those who had organised their own trips rather than booking through a tour operator should be particularly diligent in this respect.

Sean Tipton, spokesperson for Abta, advised travellers that they will need a visa to enter the country and claimed that the best way of obtaining this is to go through the agency that has been officially appointed.

"We did hear reports that a lot of hotels that you would expect to have sold out, they haven't sold out. There is actually availability," he added.

According to the FCO those travelling to China during the Olympic Games should ensure that their passport is valid for six months.

They should also make sure that they have a visa from the Chinese Embassy in London, he added, noting that if holidaymakers leave to go to Hong Kong during their stay they will need a double entry visa to get back in the country.
