British Airways to launch holiday flights from Docklands

17/12/2009

Troubled British Airways (www.ba.com) is pressing ahead with plans to launch its first holiday flights from London City Airport next spring.

The first destinations to be served from May 2010 will be Majorca and Ibiza in the Spanish Balearic islands.

Flights will operate initially on Fridays Sundays and Mondays to service the short breaks market but they are likely to increase during the peak summer months, said the airline.

Tickets have gone on sale with one-way fares start at £69 including taxes and charges.

British Airways already operates 10 flights to European destinations, two domestic flights and flights to New York from the Docklands airport, but these new services will be its first aimed at the leisure market. All its other services are aimed at business travellers.

All the leisure flights will be operated by BA CityFlyer, a wholly-owned BA subsidiary. A spokesman said: There is a growing population living and working in the city of London who want to take time off at the weekends and the Balearic Islands is a perfect destination.

""With just two hours 15 minutes flying time and a minimum check-in time of 15 minutes at London City Airport it maximises their personal time. We are also offering very competitive all-inclusive fares.""

The flight scheduled makes it possible for the growing breed of weekenders to fly out to Ibiza or Palma in Majorca on Friday morning and return on Sunday evening. Both cities attract large weekend crowds.
