Brexit: Do I still need an EHIC?

24/08/2017

The short answer to this is yes, at the moment. The EHIC card proves your entitlement to state provided health care within the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland. The EEA consists of EU countries, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein.

Nothing will change with regards to this until the UK actually leaves the EU in March 2019.

At the moment it is not clear whether the UK will still be part of the EHIC scheme after that date. (The EHIC was initiated by the EEA, rather than the EU, so whether we remain in it depends on whether we remain a part of the EEA after Brexit).

Until March 2019 having an EHIC card will make it easier for you to access healthcare the EEA and Switzerland. In addition to this, an EHIC can also save you money.

An EHIC can save you money

If you use an EHIC card when receiving medical treatment and it results in a reduction in your medical bills we will waiver the excess on your medical claim. Depending on whether you have a Silver, Gold or Platinum policy this could save you up to £100.

What is a European Health Insurance Card?

A valid European Health Insurance Card gives you the right to access state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in another European Economic Area (EEA) country or Switzerland. Treatment should be provided on the same basis as it would to a resident of that country. Remember, each country’s healthcare system is different. Services which might be free in the UK might be subject to a charge in other countries.

The EHIC is FREE: Beware of websites that charge

The EHIC is entirely free of charge, so beware of unofficial websites that will charge you for applying on your behalf. There is no need to pay for an EHIC card, you can apply online for free on the NHS website or call 0845 606 2030 for more help.

EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance

The EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance. The EHIC simply proves your entitlement to state provided healthcare, it does not cover the cost if there is any. It will also not cover any private medical healthcare or other costs such as mountain rescue in ski resorts, being flown back to the UK, or lost or stolen property. An EHIC is also not valid on cruise ships.

Please note: Travel insurance from Insurewithease.com will cover private healthcare treatment only if approved by our 24 hour medical assistance team first.
