Australia most popular with world travellers

31/01/2008

Australia is the number one destination for round-the-world travellers after the visa was extended, it has been claimed

News of the working holiday visa being extended to two years has only just spread, according to a gap year company.

Tom Griffiths, founder of Gapyear.com, said: "We're seeing some really good activity in the Australian market at the moment.

"The Australian working holiday visa was extended to two years about two years ago, and the message has got through."

The number of travellers visiting the country has been dropping for the past three years and Mr Griffiths said that the market had been "stagnant".

The expert said that New Zealand had also seen a rise in visits, describing the country as having "huge appeal".

The company reported record numbers of long-haul round-the-world tickets being purchased in the last year.

A Mintel gap year report has said that gap years are very much an option for everyone in the transition between life stages.
