Air travel: The app that can help you know your rights, right away!

29/07/2013

If you've ever suffered a flight delay, cancellation or lost luggage and been left wondering what your rights are, we have some good news for you.

Passengers forced to hang around at airports after their flight has been cancelled or delayed or left waiting for lost baggage can now use a mobile app to check what their rights are on the spot.

The EU is the only area in the world where citizens are protected by a full set of Passenger Rights and this app will make it much easier for travellers to find information about their rights at the moment they need it most.

The app includes information about air travel, rail, ship, bus and coach and is available for iPhones and iPads, Android, Blackberry and Windows Phone 7.

In addition to your rights under EU law, travel insurance can also help if you suffer a travel delay or your baggage is lost by an airline.

If your outbound flight from the UK, or your return flight to the UK is delayed by more than 12 hours you can make a claim under the travel delay section of your travel insurance policy. Travel delay is a fixed benefit which you can claim to help cover additional expenses, such as food and drink, whilst you wait at the airport for your flight.

In the event that your outbound flight is delayed by more than 24 hours you can choose to ‘abandon' your holiday and make a claim to recoup the cost, up to the amount stated in your policy schedule.

If your baggage is delayed or lost by your airline you may also be able to make a claim under the personal possessions section of your travel insurance policy. For full details of your travel insurance cover, please refer to your policy wording.
