Activity holidays score highly

04/10/2007

Sliding down desert dunes in Dubai - known as wadi bashing - and diving in the Great Barrier Reef have been named among the top-ten greatest travel experiences in the world.

The activities were named in a poll conducted by travel specialists TravelBag, with the prominence of such daring pursuits indicating people's increasing interest in activity-based holidays rather than a traditional beach-bound break.

Also on the list was walking the Great Wall of China - a long-time favourite with the backpacker crowd -, climbing the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and witnessing exotic wildlife in their natural environment on a safari in South Africa's Kreuger National Park.

The list was topped, however, by the relatively sedate appeal of Sydney Harbour Bridge for the "spectacular panoramic view of the city" it affords visitors, with flying over the Grand Canyon and seeing the Taj Mahal at sunset also placing highly.
