2 Million Brits head abroad this weekend, but do they all have travel insurance?

26/07/2013

Two million British holidaymakers will head off for a week or two in the sun this weekend according to ABTA, The Travel Association.

Spain is once again the most popular destination for Brits with other Mediterranean resorts in Turkey, Tunisia and Greece also high up on the list, whilst Florida remains the number one choice for families heading long haul.

According to research by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), as many as 24% of British nationals went abroad last year without buying travel insurance. If the same is true this year, it means that there are almost half a million Brits heading overseas this weekend, unprotected against the risk of incurring large medical bills.

Without travel insurance you are liable for your own medical bills, which can quickly amount to thousands of pounds if a stay in hospital is required.

Research from the FCO also showed that 48% of people surveyed didn't realise that they'd be liable for their own medical bills if they needed medical treatment abroad and were uninsured.

With travel insurance from insurewithease.com starting at just £8.49 for a week in Europe it definitely pays to be protect yourself and your family by travelling fully insured.

The FCO also advise holidaymakers to check that their travel insurance will provide cover for them whilst they are taking part in any sports or adventurous activities - their research shows that 50% of British holiday makers didn't check whether they were covered before taking part in an adventurous experience.

It is important to note that if you take part in a sport or activity which isn't covered by your travel insurance and you have an accident you would be liable for your own medical bills. It will only take a few minutes to check your policy wording and if your preferred activity is not covered you can add it on for an extra premium.

Travel insurance from insurewithease.com will cover over 50 sports and activities as standard, including scuba diving to 18m and water skiing. There is also the option to add cover for over 140 more adventurous activities including hot air ballooning and quad biking.
