Ski Holiday Insurance

Preparing for the ski slopes

Skiing and snowboarding can be a fantastic way to spend a winter holiday. But if you're new to it then it's unlikely that you'll be whizzing gracefully down the slopes straight away, so it's best to get some practice in before hand to make sure you get the most out of your winter break.

In addition, it's essential to get appropriate ski travel insurance to cover you in the event of an injury, cancellation, damage to ski equipment or piste closure. If you're a regular traveller then it may be best to get an annual travel insurance policy which will be more cost effective. The best annual travel insurance policies will include your ski insurance!

So, once you're all booked and have your ski travel insurance in place, it's worth arranging some lessons before you go. For children as well, it's important to gain confidence and become familiar with the ski and snowboard equipment before hand so they can have a far more enjoyable holiday.

You can book lessons at a dry ski slope, but to get a better feel for skiing or snowboarding you can try out one of the many snow domes offering a series of beginner lessons. This allows you to get some experience of winter sports, and also ensures that you get used to staying on your feet, getting the painful beginner falls, bruises and wet bottoms out of the way before your holiday!

But remember that you will still fall over, its all part of the skiing and snowboarding experience, and this can make it hard work if you're not used to it. To help you out, and so you get the most from your winter break, it's worthwhile building up your fitness levels in the six to eight weeks leading up to your skiing holiday. Combine some cardiovascular exercise like running, cycling or swimming, with weights and stretching exercises for additional strength and flexibility. This will make the world of difference by helping to minimise the aches and pains when you're away.

If you're a member of a gym, speak to an instructor who will advise you on the best exercises and ensure that you're doing them properly. You can also ask about a ski specific training and workout plan to give you the best preparation - and be sure that once you're on your ski holiday that you stretch both before and after a day on the ski slopes.

As a beginner, it can be very expensive to buy all of the ski equipment and ski wear, particularly if you're not sure that you'll enjoy it enough to become a regular skier. For your first trip it's advisable to buy thermals, socks, hat and gloves, and head to ski hire for the rest of your ski equipment. In addition, it can be very expensive to replace damaged or broken ski equipment if you're not fully insured!

If you do have your own skis, ski jackets and trousers, then make sure that your travel insurance covers you for loss or damage to your kit. Insurewithease has an annual travel insurance policy that includes winter sports cover and therefore ski travel. The winter sports cover includes:

  • Ski equipment
  • Ski hire
  • Ski pack
  • Delay to avalanche
  • Piste closure
