Advice before you travel

  • Make sure all passports are valid and in date. Check www.ukps.gov.uk for guidelines and information.
  • In the past, babies and children could be included on a parent or guardian’s passport. The law has now changed, and all children up to the age of 16 must hold a child’s passport, which is valid for 5 years. After the age of 16, an adult passport can be applied for.

  • Check whether your destination requires you to have a visa and make arrangements for one well in advance of your trip.
  • Take all documents with you including your travel insurance certificate and emergency contact details.
  • At home lock all doors and windows and cancel milk and newspapers.
  • Leave a key and your contact details with a friend who you know you can trust.
  • Don't take large quantities of cash. Instead take travellers cheques and/or credit cards.
  • Make sure you have with you the emergency numbers to cancel your credit cards.
  • Leave your valuable jewellery at home: do not be a target for thieves and muggers.

  • Read up on your destination to find out more about the culture, customs and laws.
