Weak dollar sees people shop in US

19/03/2008

A growing number of people are choosing to take advantage of the current strength of the pound against the dollar by shopping overseas, it has been claimed.

Frances Tuke, a spokesperson for the Association of British travel Agents (ABTA) said that because the dollar is "quite weak at the moment" now is a suitable time to travel to the US.

"You've got to be careful about your tax limit, but otherwise it's a good place to go shopping. Any other countries that take the dollar will also be good places to go " she commented.

According to Ms Tuke, people need to be aware that there is a limit to the amount that someone can buy abroad and so they must ensure they do not exceed this.

In December, currency specialist HiFX said that goods on US websites could cost two-thirds of the price in the UK.
