Swine flu victims must check their holiday insurance

Holidaymakers forced to cancel trips because of swine flu are being advised to check their travel insurance to see if they can claim a refund.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) said its members would probably be flexible with claims, especially as it is difficult for victims to get an official diagnosis.

An ABI spokesman said: ""We will be talking to our members and the Department of Health about exactly what is and is not covered.

""There is an issue of diagnosis. Under normal circumstances travel insurance would require confirmation from a GP but in these circumstances it is difficult as sufferers are being told not to visit surgeries.""

As the number of new swine flu cases in the UK climbs towards epidemic proportions, airlines and cruise companies have started turning away passengers who show sign of the illness.

British Airways and Virgin Atlantic are monitoring passengers at check-in and will stop anyone showing symptoms from boarding. They will not be allowed to fly until they have a clean bill of health from a doctor.

P&O Cruises is asking passengers to fill out a medical questionnaire and anyone suspected of suffering from swine flu will be assessed by the company's medical staff.
