Swedes stress necessity of travel insurance

The Swedish government has stressed the necessity of travel insurance to holidaymakers this week.

Fredrik Jorgensen, head of the consular affairs department, issued advice that is applicable to travellers not just in Sweden but worldwide, reports the Earth Times.

He warned holidaymakers that before jetting-off they should make sure they have a "proper travel insurance policy" in place.

The findings of a piece of research recently commissioned by the Swedish foreign ministry, coupled with the growing number of Swedes holidaying in far-flung destinations, prompted Fredrik to make the comments.

The study found that 40 per cent of Swedes incorrectly assumed that in cases of severe illness the Swedish embassy would pay for their transport back to their home nation.

Fredrik warned holidaymakers that they must be clear on these issues and take a "personal responsibility" for their well-being abroad.

Earlier this week, skiers were warned that taking to the slopes without proper insurance is "snow joke".

Following a series of heavy snowfalls during December 2007 and January this year, which have caused avalanches in some resorts, skiers have been urged to check that their insurance covers them off-piste as well as on the slopes.
