Queensland launches new backpacker site

06/12/2007

A new website has with been launched with the aim of highlighting Queensland's suitability as a holiday destination for backpackers.

The website includes interactive maps as well as an online booking system and is aimed principally at backpackers and gap year holidaymakers from England and Europe.

The site will also allow users to contribute their own travel experiences in a special interactive section, abc.net reports.

Backpacking Queensland chairman Brett Claxton said: "It's a very interactive site. It encompasses all the social networking sites and phenomena, Google Maps right to blogs, to feeds to all sorts of things.

"It's going to be the kind of website that people are going to want to visit."

News of the site comes as more and more backpackers are choosing Australia as a holiday destination, as born out by figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showing that tourist numbers are up three per cent this year compared with 2006.

The site can be found at www.backpackingqueensland.com.au.
