More adventurous holidaymakers 'need to check insurance'

28/01/2008

People choosing more adventurous holidays must make sure they are covered in their insurance policy, according to experts.

Increasing popularity of skiing and diving holidays mean that holidaymakers must make sure they account for "the cost of mountain rescue and decompression tanks", says a spokeswoman from STA travel.

"With any adventure holiday or long-haul trip there is more risk involved, " said the spokeswoman, "Long-haul trips also mean more expensive repatriation costs if the passenger has to be flown back to the UK."

She went on to say that adventure holidays mean doing something out of the ordinary or "off the beaten track" and so may require services like search and rescue.

The spokeswoman also said that these types of holidays tend to be more expensive than European holidays or weekends away and so are more costly to cancel if necessary.

Travellers need to check that their insurance policy meets their specific needs, as there is no "one-size fits all" policy, said STA travel.
