Home insurance 'may not be what it seems'

29/08/2008

Home insurance customers have been warned that policies may not always be what they seem by one expert this week.

According to MSN money, the small print in many policies can leave consumers feeling "over-insured yet at the same time, under-insured".

It explained that while a home insurance policy covers all of a person's possessions, usually it will only do so while those goods are inside the home.

Furthermore, many policies require policy holder to tell their broker about any expensive items separately – failure to do such things can invalidate cover.

The website advised: " If you have opted for "all risk" or "personal possessions" cover with your existing home insurance, then for an additional premium, your contents will be insured when outside the home as well."

In related news, the Islamic Bank of Britain has claimed this week that many British Muslims are unaware that their insurance products may not follow the rulings of their faith.
