Hand luggage limit to be lifted

15/11/2007

The limit of one item of hand luggage for UK travellers is set to end in January, it has been announced.

Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly confirmed that the restriction is set to be lifted as of January 7th.

The change in regulations, which had been the subject of extensive lobbying from aviation bosses, comes as a result of airports enlisting extra staff and the introduction of new security checks and procedures.

In order to be granted permission to waive the limit, airports will be required to submit an application detailing their security provisions.

Miss Kelly said: "I am announcing a new approach to hand baggage security that will be introduced progressively as airports are ready to handle the extra capacity, so we can pass the benefits on to the passenger as quickly as possible."

She added: "I hope to see rapid progress, with all airports submitting plans over the next few months."
