Halloween hosts 'must check pet insurance policies'

27/10/2008

People who plan on welcoming trick or treaters into their homes this Halloween should ensure that their pet insurance covers them against unexpected accidents, Defaqto has warned.

The financial data collection and research company advised homeowners to make sure their pet policies provide cover in the event of a dog or a cat injuring a child.

Mike Powell, Defaqto's principal consultant on general insurance, said: "People who have a dog should check their pet insurance policy to see if it includes liability cover as most home insurance policies' liability insurance will exclude cover if your dog injures a child."

Pet owners have also been urged to take steps to ensure their animals are safe on Halloween and Bonfire Night.

Blue Cross chief vet Caroline Reay explained that pets should be kept indoors during firework displays because scared animals can become dangerous.
