Extravagant Brit skiers warned to take out travel insurance

29/10/2007

British skiing enthusiasts are taking an average of £1,200 of clothes and equipment onto slopes, new research has revealed.

The spending equates to a total outlay of £1.4 billion on ski-related gear annually, according to findings from Direct Line Travel Insurance.

Chris Price, spokesperson for the travel insurance firm, said the tendency to have more and more expensive gear means that taking out adequate travel cover is more important than ever.

He said: "With the influx of new gadgets, expensive accessories, and state of the art ski and snow-board equipment, skiers and boarders need to think about the consequences of flashing their pricey designer gear to thieves.

"Winter sports holidays are not cheap and the last thing people want is the added cost of replacing their clothing and accessories for next season.

"As snow sports enthusiasts hit the slopes this year, it is vital that they make sure they have appropriate insurance to cover all their ski and snowboarding gear."

The most common object stolen from the slopes was ski passes, according to Direct Line, followed by theft of skis or snowboards and sunglasses or goggles.
