Elderly 'not shopping around for car insurance enough'

14/08/2008

Elderly people are not shopping around for car insurance enough and therefore end up paying over the odds, new research has shown.

The Telegraph newspaper reports that a study conducted by Sainsbury's Car Insurance found that older car drivers are reluctant to use comparison websites and are losing out as a result.

Consequently, over the last ten months those aged over 60 have seen a ten per cent rise in their car insurance premiums.

Average premiums, in comparison, rose by 5.8 per cent during this period, to £151; the over-60s are on average paying almost £370.

"A total of 60 per cent of car insurance is bought through comparison websites which can search for the cheapest deals. The older generation are less likely to use such sites," Adrian Webb, a spokesman at car insurer esure, told the paper.

In related news, Swinton Car Insurance is warning drivers to be careful on the roads as the Met Office has issued a number of severe weather warnings.

The firm says that in July 2008 there were 18 per cent more car insurance claims than in the same month in 2007.
