AOA: Environmentalists 'wrong' about aviation pollution targets

Environmentalists' claims that the aviation industry will fail to meet its pollution reduction targets are "wrong", the Airport Operators Association (AOA) has said this week.

According to the association, which represents the interests of British airports, the aviation industry is committed to a range of measures which will deliver "real improvements", through the 'Sustainable Aviation Programme'.

Neil Pakey, chairman of the AOA, said: "The AOA is also arguing strongly that the taxation of aviation should be emissions-based.

"Such a regime would ensure that aviation growth can be sustainable, and incentivise the industry to reduce its emissions."

Earlier this week, the British Airports Authority (BAA) lodged an application to build a new runway at Stansted Airport, in the south-east of England.

The new, full-length runway would be the first of its kind to be built in the region since the Second World War.

BAA intends to spend £6 billion over the next five years to transform all of its airports.
