Winter sports fans urged to check travel insurance

20/11/2007

Embarking on a winter sports holiday without travel insurance is little short of madness, research from an insurer has shown.

According to Essential Travel, the higher costs involved in claims relating to ski and snowboard injuries compared with those incurred on a summer holiday make travel insurance for winter breaks crucial.

To underscore the point, research from the insurer shows that the cost of assisting an injured skier on the piste stands at between £300-£400, while transport back to the UK can come in at a whopping £1,500.

Furthermore, travel insurance will also cover you for loss of often-expensive wintersports equipment, Essential Travel's Stuart Bensusan said.

"Many travel with expensive skis or boards and lots of gadgets, including mobile phones, digital camcorders, Blackberry hand-held devices and even laptops.

"With no cover in place to offer compensation if these are lost or stolen, they could seriously find themselves out of pocket."
