Wedding insurance claims for cancellations double

03/12/2007

Wedding insurance claims for cancellation have risen dramatically this year, according to new figures.

Research from Debenhams Wedding Insurance found there has been 50 per cent rise in wedding cancellation claims in the last year - up from 22 per cent last year.

Meanwhile, other common reasons cited for claims include damage to suits or wedding frocks (20 per cent), suppliers inability to deliver items or services on the date agreed (15 per cent) and the loss of or damage to gifts, flowers, rings and cakes (eight per cent).

The survey also revealed that the size of wedding insurance policies has gone up – driven in part by the increasing tendency for couples to opt for weddings abroad as well as inflation pushing up costs of food and venue hire.

Diane Jackson, head of personal finance at the firm, said: "It is virtually impossible to accurately pinpoint how much a wedding is going to cost.

"But what we can say is the fact that people are requesting higher cover suggests that many are spending anywhere up to £30,000 and beyond."
