VLM Airlines benefits from rail delays

Problems with the UK's rail network have led to more and more travellers taking planes instead, it has been claimed.

Recently, the efficiency of the UK's rail links between the north and south of the country has been hampered by the failure of Network to complete maintenance work over the Christmas and New Year period.

This has led to severe delays for thousands of travellers, with affected terminuses including Birmingham, Northampton, Liverpool and London's Liverpool Street stations.

However, one effect of the delays is that travellers have circumvented the delays by travelling by plane - and this, in turn, has helped VLM record strong bookings for its north-to-south flights.

Johan Vanneste, managing director of VLM, said: "Network Rail's failure to complete engineering work has crippled rail services between London and Manchester, and we are pleased that we have attracted new customers who have been able to experience our fast and convenient service."
