Virgin announces free carriage for surfboards

07/11/2007

Travellers with bulky equipment such as surfboards, diving and golf equipment will be offered free carriage in addition to customers' existing baggage allowance on Virgin Atlantic, the carrier has announced.

The only exemptions to the rule will be if the equipment exceeds the limit of 32 kilograms and, in the case of surfboards and windsurfs is over 2.5 metres long, according to a spokesman.

"As long as the equipment complies with size and weight allowances, Virgin Atlantic travellers can check in to the hold of the aircraft their diving equipment, golf equipment, fishing equipment, hang gliders, snow skis, surfboards, windsurfing boards, booms and sails, bicycles, paragliders, canoes and kayaks - all free of charge.

"Sporting wheelchairs are also considered sports equipment," he said.

News of the policy comes as British Airways last week declaring it was to ban surfboards from its flights, except for those who opt to travel through specialist surfing holiday companies.
