Valuable items 'should be stored in hand luggage'

18/03/2008

The Association of British travel Agents (ABTA) has advised people buying valuable items overseas to ensure that they store them in their hand luggage when they travel.

Frances Tuke, a spokesperson for ABTA, said that the US, the Middle East, Singapore and Hong Kong tend to be popular for electronics purchases.

However "in terms of insurance" the organisation advised people not to put anything of "high value" in their check-in luggage.

"It's important that you take that in your hand luggage really because it's not necessarily safely insured in your checked-in luggage," she stated.

According to TheSite.org, the recent growth in "no-frills travel" has seen an increase in the number of people from the UK making purchases overseas.

The organisation noted that approximately one-quarter of Britons now choose to do their Christmas shopping abroad.

Additionally, millions of pounds are also spent on foreign websites and with overseas mail order companies.
