British holidaymakers planning a holiday on slopes this winter are being warned not to ignore the risk of injury and ensure that they have adequate travel insurance cover.
Although ski-related serious injuries requiring hospital treatment are by no means common, when they do happen the associated costs can be significant.
In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Carmel McCarthy, a spokesperson for insurers Direct Line, pointed out that the medical bill for a typical ski injury could set you back by around £250, while simply being rescued from the slopes because of a sprained ankle cost incur costs of £75.
But despite these costs, a recent poll by esure Travel Insurance found that more than one in four Brits were planning to ski without the necessary insurance cover.
Some believed that they had adequate cover from their regular travel insurance - often not the case because of the obvious dangers associated with skiing, as well as with other extreme sports.
Others simply did not view insurance as a necessity.
"It's important to check the insurance small print before booking and be mindful of any exclusions," urged Jacky Brown, head of travel insurance at Esure.
"Call your insurer if you're unsure whether or not you'll be covered."
