Travel insurance regarded as a holiday extra

Britons' sense of priorities is somewhat skewed when it comes to spending money on holidays, it has been revealed.

According to figures from moneysupermarket.com UK holidaymakers spend an average of £100 on souvenirs, and a further £150 on day trips and excursions while on their vacations.

However, despite the risk of incurring injury or potentially costly cancellations to flights, just £67 is by them spent on travel insurance.

This is just £13 more than the average spend on magazines and snacks for the flight.

Richard Mason, director of insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said that this was evidence that travellers need to change their spending priorities and divert some of their outlay to travel inurance.

He said: "Travel cover should not be an afterthought or considered as a 'holiday extra'.

"While holidaymakers might think nothing will happen to them while they are away, travel insurance is vital for claiming on cancellations, lost cash, public liability and providing emergency medical treatment."
