Thomas Cook: '12% of Brits travel without insurance'

Around 12 per cent of Brits travel overseas without insurance according to Thomas Cook.

The tour operator's Money Matters report, published this month, also revealed that a further 1.3 per cent of holidaymakers did not know whether or not they were insured when they travelled.

Although the report found that Brits may not view their travel insurance as a necessity, it seems that taking a holiday is seen as essential.

Mark Nancarrow, Thomas Cook's financial services managing director said: "For most of us, a holiday from our busy lives is a necessity and not a luxury.

"As we continue to travel, budgeting will become more important than ever during what is seen by many as a current period of instability."

The report also found that 59 per cent of holidaymakers now pay for their travels with a financial card while around a third still use cash.

In related news, the British Insurance Brokers' Association has advised holidaymakers this month that travel agents should take care of refunds or rearrangements if their sporting or activity holidays are cancelled or delayed.
