Families are saving up to £2,000 on their holidays this year by staying with friends instead of paying for hotels, but they are reminded that they still need to buy holiday insurance.

No matter how cheap your holiday, you still need to be insured in case you become ill while abroad or your personal belongings are lost or stolen.

According to a new study by rail ticket retailer the trainline.com, two-thirds of its customers are planning to take what it has dubbed a 'paliday'. The results suggest people are saving as much as £2,000 per family by staying with friends or family.

More than 55% of the 6,000 people surveyed have already taken a 'paliday' in the last year. Nearly half of all families claimed to spend less than £600 a fortnight when holidaying with friends and family which, according to trainline, is 77% less than the average cost of a 2-week summer holiday.

More than a fifth said their decision to stay with friends or family was due to the economic climate. Those looking to save even more money can get free holiday insurance cover for children travelling with an insured parent at insurewithease.com.
