Skiers 'could get cheaper holidays'

29/01/2008

Millions of pounds are being wasted by British skiers opting for France over Eastern European destinations, according to a new survey.

Over £2,500 could be saved by holidaying in Bulgaria instead of Courcheval in France, says the research by PriceRunner.co.uk.

The price comparison site has found that a week's holiday for a family of four in Bulgaria, including hotel, food and drink, ski passes and equipment hire, would cost £1,073, compared to £3,803 for the French equivalent.

Mattias Berg, UK country manager at PriceRunner.co.uk, said: "The prices of ski holidays differ greatly, but it is wrong to assume that the most expensive resorts are always the best."

People's preferences may dictate the country best for them to travel to, for example skiers preferring to spend time in bars and club would be best to avoid Norway where a beer costs £4.

Other countries that offer value for money include the Czech Republic and Slovenia, with France and Austria being the most expensive, the report says.

According to the Ski Club, Switzerland is the most romantic ski resort for couples, with France, Austria and Italy also making the top five, reports FastTrackSki.co.uk.
